"Best use I ever found for these disks besides reformatting them might be to re-tile my bathroom if I get enough of them :)" --Norman, 2/23/96
"I have found that they make great coasters and are a talking point, eg. 'Why would you use disks for coasters? Won't they get ruined?' !!" --Andrew, 2/22/96
Now that I want to see!
"I plan on making Christmas ornaments with them. Then I can say, "CD (see the) ornaments?" People have accused me of being a sick puppy. Anyway, glue them back to back and put some string through the middle and viola, cheap, easy, kids projects! ....Hey, Maybe Martha Stewart could find a use for them. Does she have an E-mail address?" --Casey, 2/21/96
"Sometimes, if I'm in my office, and I need to copy a file to a diskette to give someone, it's easier just to pull the AOL disk out of a computer magazine than it is to find a new disk." --Tom, 2/18/96
"Just read and enjoyed your report. Thanks to AOL, I never have to buy floppy's again. Since they don't permanently write protect their disks, I just format and use. If I see a disk with the AOL label on my desk, I know its ready to store data!" --Scott, 2/7/96
Scott's not alone--several people have commented on how the influx of access disks over the past years has saved them a bundle. Rumor has it the access provider disks are of low quality--good for occasional use, but not something to trust critical data to. Anyone care to confirm or deny? Let me know.
"Just browsed through your page, and I must admit you have received quite a good many disks :) I have accumulated perhaps 30 or so of the odd things myself and am curious to know if you have discovered any sort of use for them. There must be a good many places that can benefit from the diskettes, perhaps you should start or find some kind of drop box/clearinghouse/charity to send these things to and post that along with your page?" --Mike, 2/6/96
Not a problem--if anyone knows of a place, let me know!
"I am saving my discs for the moment. For what, I'm not sure. Although I have noticed that when I am feeling down, just looking at their festive packaging and knowing they want me, makes me feel a little happier inside. Besides, maybe the different variations will someday be collector's items. I hear there are people who now collect old games like pac man, pong, space invaders, etc. And won't you just be having the last laugh then! Keep on countin'!" --Deb, 1/29/96
I agree--some of the disks, like the GNN ones sent out late last year, are quite beautiful. If I have time, I'll add an online gallery--maybe with the help of others on the web, we can show the evolution of the AOL disk!
