Internet Access Provider Disk Report: January 1996

This report began in August 1995 and is updated monthly. Totals reflect all disks received through January 31, 1995.

Total Disks Received: 40

What a month! Eleven disks were received in January, breaking the old record of nine in October 1995. Overall, 40 disks have been received since the report began.

Whose Disks?

America Online slightly increased its percentage of total disks received, going from 59% at the end of December to 60% at the end of January. CompuServe nudged out Prodigy to grab the number two spot, which it last held in October.

NOTE: Others are Earthlink and Concentric.

Type of Disks

3.5" disks were the only type of disks received in January, pushing up their slice of the total number of disks received from 79% in December to 85% in January. November was the last time I received a CD-ROM access provider disk. Are they getting cheap?

Delivery Method

In January, more disks arrived via direct mail than bundled in magazines, causing the overall percentage of disks received by magazine to drop from 72% in December to 65%.

Disks Per Month, Per Service

The America Online juggernaut continued on, its seven disks received in January easily outpacing CompuServe's three disks. Will no one repeat the Prodigy victory of November 1995?

Consistency was the hallmark of January, with 2 disks arriving weekly until the last week.
